SmarterSafer Pushes For Long-Term NFIP Reform

SmarterSafer.org, a national coalition that opposes legislative proposals that encourage people to build homes in hurricane-prone, environmentally sensitive areas, is urging Congress to pass long-term reform of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

The NFIP, which is managed by the Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration, has repeatedly been granted short-term extensions, with the latest extension continuing the program through Dec. 16.

"Temporary fixes only make the program more unstable," SmarterSafer.org said in a statement. "It is time for Congress to pass meaningful, long-term NFIP reform so the nation can promote hurricane safety and reduce the costly rebuilding that can often be prevented with proper preparation and planning."
