Credit Unions In Legal Tussle Over Similar Names A Pennsylvania credit union that recently changed its name has been sued by an Ohio credit union with a similar name.

CUNA News reports that Greensburg, Pa.-based FirstEnergy Federal Credit Union, formerly Allegheny Energy Federal Credit Union, was hit with a lawsuit by Akron, Ohio-based FirstEnergy Family Credit Union. Both institutions have members in Ohio, and the Akron-based institution has charged the Pennsylvania-based credit union with federal trademark infringement and unfair competition violations.

For its part, the Pennsylvania credit union explained that it changed its name to reflect an expanded membership charter that incorporates FirstEnergy Corp. employees and their families. Allegheny Energy Inc., the credit union's original membership charter base, was recently acquired by FirstEnergy Corp.
