The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has opened preliminary probes into the financial details and struggles of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and American International Group (AIG) Inc. All of the firms are at the center of recent financial turmoil.
According to a Wall Street Journal article, FBI and regulators are currently under pressure to hold high-profile executives accountable for the crisis – particularly following the announcement of a taxpayer-funded bailout. The specific crimes that that FBI is expected to uncover may include fraud or other wrongdoings.
