Geithner: Housing Finance Reform Remains ‘Unfinished Business’

Geithner: Housing Finance Reform Remains 'Unfinished Business' The U.S. is far removed from solving the problems facing the housing finance system, according to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

Reuters reports that Geithner, in a speech delivered yesterday at the Chicago Economic Club, said the ‘biggest source of unfinished business in the financial reform effort is in the housing finance area.’ Although he stated that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were no longer ‘a source of systemic risk,’ the question of the government's role in housing finance remains unanswered.

‘We are much further behind in laying out the future path of reform in the housing finance system and what should replace those institutions,’ Geithner said.
