Freddie Mac says it has received a federal grand jury subpoena from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, as well as notice from the Staff of the Enforcement Division of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) notice indicating that the Enforcement Division is also conducting an inquiry.

Freddie Mac has been instructed to preserve documents. The subpoena seeks documents relating to accounting, disclosure and corporate governance matters for the period of January 1, 2007, to the present. Freddie Mac notes that it will cooperate fully in these matters.

Similarly, Fannie Mae has disclosed that it filed a Form 8-K with the SEC stating that the company received notice of ongoing federal government investigations and inquiries by the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and the SEC.
