The U.S. Government Services Agency (GSA) has announced that it will hold an online auction to sell the former GSA West Heating Plant site in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C.
The six-story facility, which is based on a 2.08-acre site overlooking the Potomac River, will be offered for sale via online auction at realestatesales.gov. The GSA has not set a date for the auction, but is planning to hold it sometime in early to mid-November.
According to the Washington Post, the property has been vacant since 2000. Real estate developers have raised proposals that would turn the plant into condominiums, while neighborhood groups have sought to set aside part of the property as a public park.
The GSA's auction is the latest in its efforts to dispose or redevelop federal properties that are either vacant or underutilized. Earlier this year, the GSA made national headlines when it chose real estate mogul Donald Trump to redevelop Old Post Office Pavilion, which is located on Pennsylvania Avenue within walking distance of the White House.
