Zillow Inc. has promoted Kathleen Philips, formerly the company's general counsel, to chief operating officer.

Philips, who joined the company in 2010, played an instrumental role in Zillow's 2011 initial public offering. Prior to joining Zillow, she was general counsel at FanSnap Inc., a venture capital-backed ticket search engine, where she was also responsible for customer support, online marketing and finance operations.

Philips has also held roles at Pure Digital Technologies, StubHub and Hotwire.com.

In her new role, Philips' responsibilities have broadened to include human resources and customer service. She also oversees the Zillow's M&A activities, which during the past two years have included six acquisitions. She also heads Zillow's new and growing San Francisco office, which is home to more than 65 employees.
